Life isn't always Instagram-able.

In fact, sometimes it's ridiculously stressful. Am I allowed to say that? I don't even know, but let's roll with it.

Does this sound familiar? It’s the day of your photo session … the kids are fighting, the baby pooped his pants, and you still don’t know what you’re wearing. Then there’s the outfits, the weather, and the attitudes (from the toddler, the teen, or the less-than-pumped husband).

You arrive and try to corral your children and smile through the circus that is this season of life. On the way home, you cross your fingers and pray that you got at least ONE good photo.

I’ve learned something in my 15+ years doing this whole family photographer thing…it doesn’t have to be that way. Your family can play, read books and just let the moments happen. You can breathe easy, with your already-planned, coordinated outfits, looking incredible and creating real memories. Let me show you how it’s done.

Also...I’m gonna let you in on a secret…the hard part isn’t actually taking the family photos. It’s raising the kids. And I know you’re crushing that part. Because seeing what a good job you’re doing in your family photos? It’s worth all that stress.

We're going to do things a bit differently. This is about you; this is about telling your story. Let's capture the REAL stuff.

Dress appropriately for the location, unpredictable weather, and bring extra shoes (if need be!). Never ever rely solely on heels to get you where you need to be. I want you to be as comfortable as possible and hurting feet won't help anyone!

Many of my locations require hikes to get to where we need to be, so preparing for that is always a good idea. Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations, right?

When it comes to picking an outfit, there are certain things you definitely want to avoid. I say this to make sure your photos are the best they can be. Some clothing photographs better than others, so please keep that in mind!

THINGS TO AVOID

Avoid neon / fluorescent colors (especially lime green, salmon, or neon orange) as these articles of clothing can distract from the scenery, your faces, or reflect in the sun and cause your skin to have different colors on it. This is unfortunately very unflattering and won't photograph well.

Avoid colors that match the scenery. For example: if we are taking photos in a field of tall, green grass - do NOT wear green. â€‹

Avoid wearing bracelets, big watches, hair ties, or other distracting wrist items. This can take away from the photo more than you'd think - especially when it comes to detailed ring or hand shots.

Avoid wearing bold, striped patterns or very heavily patterned articles of clothing. Plaid is okay to an extent, but I do not recommend wearing it if you have another outfit you love more.

Avoid spray tans if at all possible. If you have to get a spray tan, choose an olive tone and get it about a week or so before so it has time to fade.

Avoid bringing too many outfit choices! Outfit choices are always a good idea as it puts a break in the session so it gives you more of a variety - but bringing your whole wardrobe isn't necessary. For seniors, I recommend bringing at least 3 -5 outfits (if you'd like to).

Avoid wearing matching clothing, especially when it comes to family or couple sessions. This can make you appear as a sort of 'blob' and isn't the most flattering, For example, if you wear a black top, have your significant other or one of your family members wear a lighter top. We all like things to match but this isn't the case when it comes to photos. However, I have photographed couples who have matched before and their session was absolutely gorgeous. If you want to give it a try, be sure to reach out to me first! I will gladly point you in the right direction.

Now that I've listed the things to avoid when it comes to your session, I will now give you examples of things to shoot for (pun intended) when it comes to your outfit!

THINGS TO WEAR

Wear neutral colors. Neutral colors are what almost all photographers recommend when it comes to photos for a reason. Colors like whites, creams, tans, blacks, blues, or caramels are P E R F E C T for any photo session!

Keep in mind, almost all colors have neutrals to them. If you have a specific color you love, don't be afraid to wear it. Just remember when looking for your desired color that you look for something more mildly hued rather than bright & bold. If you have something you love and aren't sure it'll photograph well, reach out to me! I have helped hundreds of my clients find their perfect outfit and I will be happy to do the same for you.

Wear different textures - this is a big one!

Wear outfits that compliment each other and the spot where your photos will be held, but do NOT match. If you need help on whether or not your outfit is complimenting, reach out to me.

Wear / bring layers with you. If you are wearing a dress that isn't very fitting to your form and is more loose, bring a belt! Flowy can sometimes look unflattering. Having the option of a belt can help you in the long run.

Wear flowy items. You're probably sitting there thinking I am contradicting what I said above. While that is slightly true, some items that are flowy look better. I absolutely love photographing flowy dresses or skirts - these make for amazing photos and give you the option to twirl, throw, and spin that dress around.

OTHER HELPFUL TIPS

Be on time for your session. I CANNOT stress this enough. Being late for your session only makes you feel rushed and in a bad mood. If you're on time or even early, this can give you the chance to relax, listen to music, talk with your significant other or family, and fix your hair or lipstick. Being on time is key to the perfect session.

Bring a blanket or winter coat if it's cold. A blanket or coat that photograph well would be the perfect add on for a session.

Be confident and prepare to have FUN!

BUT, WHAT WILL I WEAR?!

This is just a simple outfit guideline from what I have learned over the years as a photographer works best!

Picking outfits for your session can be stressful and often times difficult (trust me, I've been there).

Just remember to have fun, keep it simple, and be yourself. The photos will reflect who you are as a couple,

family, or whatever it may be no matter what!

As a photographer I strive to bring about the natural, fun side to my clients. I strive to make them laugh and completely forget I am taking their photos. If you're confident in your session, you'll look confident in your photos. If you're ready to laugh and have a good time, then you'll look amazing. I can't stress this enough!

the FAQs

I’m a natural light, on-location, lifestyle photographer.

Meaning, the props I utilize are the sun and nature and YOU. Your lives, your personalities, your silly dynamic as a whole. Studio photography is stuffy & unnatural, in my own personal & professional opinion. I’ve found YOU come out when you’re in the sun.

Kids get weird when I’m around.

Think about it, there’s this strange lady pointing a giant black box at them – they’re going to get weird. I beg of you - let me do my job. The more you bark orders & commands at them, the more they’re going to shut down & they won’t give me the best version of themselves. It’s definitely not my first rodeo with tiny humans. My objective is to capture them being kids & give you memories behind your images for years to come. I realize you want those traditional, nice & posed family photos, but you’ll be surprised that I actually do get those by letting them get a little crazy. Let them be little & weird. You’ll thank me in the end.

Don’t overthink your session.

This goes for every aspect from outfits to poses. I’ll give you direction on posing, but for the most part, I want to capture you in your natural stances in a natural element. The more natural & relaxed you are, the more natural everyone’s smiles will be.

I’m going to prompt you to do weird things – go with it.

Have fun. The more fun you have, the more you laugh, the more you’re going to get out of your session.

Don’t ever mix patterns & PLEASE…do not awkwardly wear the same thing.

Your outfit choices are an outward expression of you. There are always wonderful ideas on Pinterest if you feel the need to plan appropriately, but I will never request you to buy a whole new wardrobe for your short amount of time with me. If little Johnny wants to wear his Iron Man costume, please PLEASE let him rock it.

I have yet to meet a woman who doesn’t tear herself apart to me when in front of my lens.

Or a man who loves taking family photos. We just seem to be biologically conditioned this way. Trust me – I understand the psychology behind portrait photography all too well. I promise I'll take care of you.

This is an investment, I definitely believe in payment plans.

I realize that certain milestones where photography is needed can create a seemingly financial anxiety attack, but I'm here to work with you. CALL ME. Let's chat & I'll help.

Every image in your album will be edited in color & black & white.

...but it will have a download cap based on your package choice. Albums stay active for two-weeks, so be sure to choose wisely & download as soon as you're able. Additional images are available for purchase individually, as well as entire albums. In that case, I simply need a text with image numbers & can release immediately. Costs are calculated by my time, equipment, hosting services for you, editing softwares, mileage, insurance, constant education, etc. Under no circumstances will RAW images ever be delivered, so no need to ask. You're paying for my brand & editing style.

WHEN WILL MY ALBUM BE DELIVERED?

It genuinely depends on your session. Weddings can take up to 4-months if shot during peak season, and family & senior sessions can take under 2-weeks.
